Abstract

The artists have created a body of work of some 140 video sequences, each a few minutes in length, titled “Pièces à vivre.” These video images of films and documentary plans are a blend of fleeting objects, places and figures.

In this bilingual book (English-French) presenting the artistes’ work, Philippe-Alain Michaud (Art historian and curator at the Centre Pompidou-Musée National d'Art Moderne), through an analysis of the phantom image and the notion of the figure, and Jean-Christophe Royoux (Art critic), taking Joyce’s “chaosmos” as a starting point, suggest a way of interpreting these pieces by Paule Combey and Patrik Pion as symptoms revealing the time and the life of the images they have selected.
