Sylvie
Ungauer is a young artist who lives in Orléans, France.
Before settling in the Région Centre, she has participated
in numerous European projects. She has been among those
who obtained a "Pépinière Européenne" grant in Dortmund
Kunst Europa Frankreich, exhibited in Ludwiburg Kunst
Europa Frankreich. In collaboration with Suzanne Stôvhase,
she organized "Expedition Europa" which simultaneously
invested several places in France and Germany. A number
of personal exhibitions have been devoted to her, among
which at the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary
Art. Recently, she has been welcomed at La Box in Bourges,
and at the École Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Tours, France,
each time within the frame of a stay followed by an exhibition.
This catalogue was made for Sylvie Ungauer's exhibition
"At Home" which was presented at the FRAC Centre and which
comprises new elements produced by the artist between
November 1999 and January 2000, during her stay at the
Calder Studio in Saché. Sylvie Ungauer is interested in
the relations and systems that give structure to our society,
but also in the relationship between the individual, his
environment he or she inhabits and the outside world.
Besides, she favours the use of materials which have a
role of carriers - such as video, fibre optics or the
Internet network - establishing a sort of interactivity
with the public. This relationship that sets itself up
between the work, the public and their presentation into
space is inherent to her approach. Sylvie Ungauer's work
makes us realize that new technologies which link people
through a screen are deeply changing the means of communication
and existing relationship patterns.
